The Importance of Providing Sun Protection to Dogs

When we heard that the Ventura County Animal Services needed a way to provide a cool and comfortable place for dogs, volunteers and staff outside, we knew we had to help.  

The Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) is a “no kill” shelter that cares for more than 10,000 stray, abandoned and injured animals a year. Among the numerous cats, rabbits, reptiles and birds at the VCAS are dogs that play and get their daily exercise at the shelter’s outdoor playground. 

During the summer months when temperatures can soar above 90 degrees, it can be dangerous for both dogs and people to spend extended time outside.

In fact, thousands of dogs die from extreme hyperthermia, otherwise known as “heat stroke,” each year.

As part of an Eagle Scout Service Project a few years ago, we donated a shade canopy to the VCAS that the local troop installed. Seeing that the shelter was in need of an additional shade structure, we decided to donate a second 40x20x7 Hip Roof Canopy. Now with two shade structures to provide shade and protection, both dogs and families can spend longer amounts of time outside in the fenced area.
